7 Reasons Why I'm Ready for College Football Season

A big THANKS to Phats for giving me this opportunity to guest-blog in this week before the college football season begins. I had the joy of winning Phats' March Madness challenge last year and the guest-blogging was my Grand Prize (I was kinda wishing for a deep fried oreo and a date with John Cusack, but since I haven't set him up with Carrie Underwood lately, I can't really fault him for that! Besides...he also sent me an awesome Purdue t-shirt that I'm going to wear during football season, so it's all good!)
I really considered what I would blog about for the guest post and seriously thought of writing one titled, "10 Reasons Why Alabama football is better than Purdue Football" (or "Why the SEC rocks!"), but I figured that Phats would boycott me for life if I did something like that, so...I decided to go for something less subtle, yet something that shows our shared love for all-things sports
(I, for one, enjoy Phats' sport-related posts more than anything, and we are kindred spirits because of our crazy obsession with college football, basketball, basically anything that involves competition. I, also, was a cheerleader WAY back in junior high school...long before Phats was even a fetus...and can still do the splits. So, yeah, Phats is pretty cool!)
So...for your reading pleasure...
Seven Reasons Why I'm Ready for College Football Season
(7) Because--even though the U.S. Open, Wimbledon, and Michael Phelps were all VERY exciting during the off-season--I am getting tired of searching for a sport, any sport, to watch while I'm eagerly waiting for the REAL action to begin.
(6) Because there is nothing like walking onto your college campus, football tickets in hand, and approaching that beautiful stadium at dusk. My college campus is in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, home of the Crimson Tide, and I literally get goose-bumps when I see the lights of Bryant Denny Stadium ahead of me. Watching my team, alongside 92,000 other fans, is something that compares to little else.
(5) Because, as I wait for the season to begin, optimism remains eternally high. Sure, we may go on to endure crushing defeats at the hand of Clemson, Georgia, LSU (and, God-forbid, Auburn one more time), but for now we're undefeated. The season remains full of hope and positivity. I can safely say that I think we can win 9 games this year and, for now, no one can prove me wrong!!
(4) Because, I live in the greatest place in the world for college football. The rest of you can tell me about how your part of the country loves college football, but in the South we truly live it. We talk about football year-round, and one half of our state can go into mourning for an entire year if you lose that all-important game. (Phats..you have to come down South and catch an SEC game sometime. You'd love it!)
(3) Because, there is nothing like the smell of tailgating on a Saturday morning--and then the taste of stadium food in the afternoon. Down South we do barbecue, and we do it good. A big slab of ribs before the game is a great way to get started; and then, during the game, there's nothing like a big tall Coke and some smushy nachos (or a hot dog, which is my husband's preference).
(2) Because it gives me the chance to raise my girls right. My oldest daughter, McKenna, could sing the Alabama fight song at three-years-old. And my youngest, who is four right now, pretty much already knows the basic rules of football. I know that there are more important things in the greater scheme of things, and I do my best to raise my girls to be kind, and intelligent, and spiritual, and loving. But I also teach them to love football!
(1) Because...and this list could go on, and on, and on, and on, because there are so many reasons I love it, and this list is really way too simplistic... the game encapsulates what life is all about. The way teams fight back and win a close victory; the agony seen on the faces of the athletes when they lose a close one; the battle between good and evil (when we play Tennessee, I especially feel this way)...the joy, the pain, the exultation, the disappointment. It runs the gamut...and, whether we win or lose...I wouldn't trade it for anything.
So...in five more days...my beloved Alabama will play Clemson in the real start of the football season (It's on at 8:00 CT on ABC, for those of you interested in watching a good game; College GameDay will be there all day long too!) and I get three months full of clinched fists, closed eyes, and sore throats.
I encourage you to find a team you can follow (if you don't have one, I recommend either Alabama or Purdue!!), grab your loved ones near to you, and enjoy the greatest game in the world!

Phats, I am so done with you.
Oh no, Topolk, don't give up on Phats!! (If you had guest blogged, he probably would have picked Clemson in the game! :-)
So...how do you think the game is gonna go? There's no way I'd pick a win for us as big as Phats did, but...I do think it will be a good, close game.
Oh no, I'm just bustin' Phats' chops. With a win that big I knew he was playing you up.
How do I think it's gonna go? Well knowing my team we usually get up for big out of conference games (the '03 UGA game being an exception) so I think we'll be fine. And as much as we bust Tommy's balls he does well against "big name" coaches so Saban doesn't scare us.
The only things (quietly) bothering us in Tigertown are:
1) We know very little about Alabama.
2) Our O-Line and LB are our weaknesses -- but from what we gathered you guys aren't any better off in the same positions.
3) That #9 Ranking. Our boys tend to get lazy when they go in as favorites...
...but all things considered, I'm picking my boys to win. I think right now the spread is -5 but I see us winning a game a shave closer than that (-3).
But even if we lose (which is very possible) we're honestly more concerned with winning the ACC than beating Alabama or South Carolina. Our conference is horrible this year. With the team we have, we have no excuse not to get the automatic BCS berth this year.
AMEN! I only hope my Huskers get back on track under Pelini.

I know what you me Cheryl about college football. I grew up a Buckeyes fan and my ex husband got me hooked on Tennessee (GO VOLS!!) The SEC has it done right. Their games are powerful. I would love to go see one, but here in NC we have NC State and UNC.... Duke is up there too and since the Vols offensive coach is there, that might be interesting.
I grew up in the football capital of the world, Canton, OH. The home of the Pro-Football HOF.
We shall see how the Tide does w/ the Vols. Good luck in October!!
Hey Phats!!!!
I guess you can imagine that I am BEYOND HAPPY this afternoon. I am still excited from the game yesterday--in fact, I just rewatched it on my DVR (we were screaming so loud during the game last night that I actually watched my recorded version so I could actually hear the commentary this time). I was so proud of how we played. Once we get into the SEC schedule, it may be a different store--but for now I'm feeling pretty good!

Hi Phats. Well, it's here again ... and you know how I feel about it. :o) An added feature to the season has become how much it amuses me that as soon as football (college of other) season starts, you are the first person I think of. Who knows, a Superbowl together is something to look forward to. DDTF was a very happy Dad when Ross asked me to call him in London to inform him of the acquisition of Mr. Favre. Have a great season. Happy Labor Day, too.
