Well, as promised this is going to be my NCAA tournament entry covering March Madness. I was waiting til tonight because the women's selection was on tonight, and that's the important bracket because that is the one Purdue is in. I don't expect spy, and some others to comment considering this is about sports, but hey what can you do right? This is my favorite time of the year I love it! So, how many of you will be filling out brackets, and entering office pools?
As always there were some surprises on both the mens and the womens side of the bracket but we'll get back to that. Lets start the ball rolling with the men and take a look at the #1 seeds.
In atlanta we have the hated Duke Blue Devils and their fearless leader JJ Redick, one of the best shooters I have ever seen(sorry shife). They received the overall #1 seed as well. Memphis took the #1 seed in Oakland, this was the one seed not too many were sure of, I don't think until the conference tournaments were done anyone was sure if Memphis had it or not. In DC the 1 seed is UConn, this is no surprise at all, this is the team picked by many to win the whole tournament this year. Finally the 1 seed in Minny is Villanova. An injury to a key player might have put their one seed in doubt, but the Wildcats were able to snag it. I think for the most part the 1 seeds were right on, have I mentioned I hate Duke?
Predictions for the 1 seeds
First 1 seed to lose- Memphis
1 Seed that is the biggest fav to win it all- Uconn
So, when the bracket comes out it's always just as intriguing to see who got in that shouldn't have, and who got snubbed. I believe this year the winners for getting the bid were Utah State, and the Air Force Academy. I was shocked to see Air Force in, they had horrible numbers for their RPI and Strength Of Schedule. That being said and everyone saying they don't belong watch them go out and win their first round game. Biggest snub is easy, it had to be Cincy, everyone thought the bearcats secured their golden ticket, most didn't think it was to the NIT. I thought Michigan not getting in was a crock of horseshit too, I know they stumbled down the stretch, but they played a tough schedule and came up with some big wins. So lets take a look at some teams that were over and underseeded.
Overseeded
Tenn. How in the hell did they get a 2 seed?!?
Indiana. a 6 seed? You have to be kidding me! They got a cush draw too, bastards
Underseeded
North Carolina/Florida. I think both teams had a case for that final 2 seed that UT got. UNC hurt themselves by losing in the ACC tournament semi's, but Fla won their tournament.
Boston College. Not for their seed but because they got shipped out west as a 4 when the 5 nevada stays on the same timezone, ya that's fair.
Other notes from the bracket
Best first round games
Arizona vs Wisconsin. The always sexy 8/9 game should be a dandy
Pitt vs Kent State(DG's team!) Could this be the 12/5 upset this year?
Best potential second rd match up
Indiana vs Gonzaga. Who would I root for I can't stand either. IU plain SUCKS, the Zags are overrated. I guess I'd root for the Zags
Syracuse vs LSU WOW what a great match up here, especially with the roll the Cuse is on
Pitt vs Kansas. This would be a great game. I can't wait for this thing to start!
Don't bet on it, team that will flop
Gonzaga. Ever since they went from being cinderella to favorite they have choked. They don't play defense and you know the old saying "Defense wins championships.
Cinderella
Going with Northern Iowa this year, watch out for the Panthers.
Final Four
Texas vs UCLA
Uconn vs Florida
Uconn over Texas for the national title. BOOK IT, but don't bet on it :)
Onto the Ladies. Let me first say it was very odd to have selection Sunday turn into selection Monday. I was excited for this draw because the Boilers are in the field of 64 woohoo! It's the 13 straight appearance for Purdue, they went to the final four in 94, won it all in 99, and runner up in 01 thanks to a bad call sending the big moose ruth riley to the freethrow line. The controversy started early for the ladies as the number 1's were revealed being, North Carolina, Duke, LSU, and Ohio State. Everyone thought Tenn was a sure thing for a 1 seed, and Pat Summit the legendary coach of the Lady Vols was fuming after the show, more on that later. The women's tournament doesn't seem to get the upsets the men get, but they do have a 16 over a 1 in their history. So, the first region was Cleveland where UNC is the 1 seed, and then we saw it the Boilers name revealed as the 4 seed woohoo! We play Sunday vs Missouri State at Mackey! I will so be there so watch for me on tv. We were awarded the good fortunes of being a host for the first and second round, and expect the fans to support this bunch. Lets take a look at the bracket, first the 1 seeds
First 1 seed to lose
I am going with Duke they don't have the easiest draw. Although UNC could potentially face the 8 seed Vandy on their homecourt never easy.
Will all four 1 seeds advance to the final four- NO
Biggest snubs
Indiana State! How could the sycamores not get in, sure they lost in their conf. tournament but their RPI was in the 20's that was baffling.
Lucky to be in the field
Iowa- I was surprised in a down year for the big 10(11) the hawks got in. Good for them :)
Cal- Considering that they themselves said in press conferences "we are shocked to be in" well so am I!
Overseeded
Michigan State- WHAAAA a 4 seed for the Spartans, that was interesting.
Underseeded- UT, the lady vols did get hosed, not only a 2 seed but in the same region as the best one seed. It's kind of funny on one hand because everyone usually kisses their ass, but I do feel somewhat bad. Pat Summit said "it was a slap in the face" so I am sure the vols will be on a mission. Oh yeah guess who gets to go to Bridgeport again for the Sweet 16, yep the Huskies geesh, another year being a 2, and the potential 1 having to play them on basically their homefloor to go to the final four.
Best first rd games
UK vs Chattanooga. The Mocs could easily upset the cats.
UCLA vs Bowling Green. Winner gets Purdue if we win, BGSU no pushover.
Best Potential second rd match up
Baylor vs Fla- Defending champs vs the up and coming gators.
Purdue vs UCLA wow this will be an interesting clash of styles. The crowd will push the Boilers thru.
Don't bet on it
Oklahoma, played in a very down Big 12, might get shocked early.
Final Four
UNC vs Maryland
Uconn vs LSU
UNC over LSU
*My beloved Boilers will fall to UNC in the sweet 16. Playing in Mackey will get them to the sweet 16 easily defeating MO State, and then UCLA.
Best of luck to all of you out there that have teams in this year tournament. I think BOTH tournaments will be incredibly exciting. Remember these are college athletes and you should not bet on them, but if you choose to do so do it responsibily! Mens games start Thurs/Friday women Sat/Sunday. GO BOILERS!! BOILER UP!
BTW anyone catch the new reality show Cheerleader Nation?? it was freaking AWESOME! Me being a former college cheerleader, and now a coach I loved it! I wish I could coach a squad like that.
