FUCK THE IRISH!

Yes, only two teams deserve the F word in the title and that is Indiana and Notre Dame, and this week we face the no fight them irish. It's not secret I HATE HATE HATE Notre Dame, infact I would like nothing more than to punt their mascot that dumbass looking leprechaun. Look I am not dumb I know that our program is struggling right now but I really feel like we have a shot at this thing, but we have to play pretty much perfect football, and hope ND still has the case of turnoveritis. The best part about the game it's a night game which is rare at Ross Ade because we have no lights, ESPN has to bring them specially for the game. Night games mean the students are fing crazy because they start drinking at 6am at breakfast club and don't stop til the game so I am looking forward to the atmosphere.

A battle of #7 versus #8 on the undercard before ND and Purdue. Yeah i know you are a Boilermaker and all but come on dude everyone, even the senile Brent Musburger realizes Huskers/Badgers is the marquee game of the week.

So can my beloved Huskers go into Madison and take down the Badgers? Will Nebraska toss aside years of tradition and don black helemts rather than the long-standing white with the red N. Will Bo Pelini accidentally bite off a players nose in one of his trademark sideline tirades? Answering in reverse order I'm going to say No, No, and as much as it pains me no. Oh how I wish they would bust out some gnarly black helmets, oh how I wish Martinez could stand int he pocket and deliver a pinpoint pass when need be but sadly I don't think either will happen. But hell I am a fiction writer so I'm used to making stuff up. Others call it lying but we writers prefer the term "taking creative liberties) so I'm going to make up a score and a scenario where Wisconsin fumbles 4 times aand gives up both a punt and kick return to let an inconsistent Husker offense come away with the surprise win Huskers 23 - Badgers 21

Much more enjoyable Saturday

It was definitely a better weekend for Phats, both the Boilermakers and Saints won!! The Purdue game was great because not only did it not come down to a last second play, but we did what we were suppose to against an inferior team. For those that don't know we won against SEMO 59-0 Saturday. While I am excited I know it's fools gold with that game seeing as how SEMO was AWFUL, but it was nice to see us go out and clobber them. We only punted 1 time in the game, and the second half Coach Hope only called 1 pass play and we were able to still score. The other bright spot of the game Marve got in and looked GREAT led us on a LONG scoring drive, and didn't seem to have any bad reactions to the knee so that is good. Now we head into our bye week BOO!!! Then it's the Notre Dame game which will be a night game baby!!! POTFI!!!

As for the picks, both Emily and I did a pretty good job I would say. I went 15-3 for the week, not too shabby I am still regretting not picking the Clemson Tigers I started out picking them, and at the last minute switched to Auburn, D'oh!! As for Emily, she went 12-3 for the weekend pretty good showing, and 2 of her three teams won! Don't worry just because the Boilers are off this week, I have a special pick em upcoming for this week.

The other big college sports new over the weekend was the announcement of Pitt, and Syracuse leaving the Big East for the ACC. I don't like the idea of the super conference but unfortunately all signs point to that. As for this move, it's a win/lose for the ACC in my opinion. Win- Basketball they want to be back among the elite in the major conferences this will do that. What a top 4 of Pitt, Cuse, Duke, and UNC! The downside though teams that were at the top with Duke and UNC like Clemson, VT, NC State, UVA will now struggle to get wins and will more than likely have a hard time making the tournament. I can see Seth Greenberg crying now. As for football, it has no impact, Cuse and Pitt haven't been good in football or revelant I guess I should say in years.

I love that fall TV is starting!!! Looking forward to my old favorites returning, and catching some of the new shows. Watching the Sing Off tonight, don't remember it starting this early last year, but gives us an excuse to dump Dancing with the stars.

Week three already here kids

Before I get into all the college football madness, I want to share that the girl who had played #1 singles the last for years for the HS team I coach got her first collegiate win this past weekend posting a 6-0, 6-1 win at #2 Singles, and also went 2-1 at the #1 Doubles spot.  I am so proud of her and knew she would do well this is a great start to her college career.

Well, we are in week three and yes the Boilermakers are coming off an embarrassment of a loss to Rice.  I want to state that I am not one to quickly jump on the "lets fire coach" bandwagon.  For starters it was hard to judge Coach Hope last year after all we went through, but his in game management Saturday at Rice was bad.  Down to 2 timeouts left a 4th and 1 on our own 25 yard line he tries to draw them off sides and of course they don't jump so he uses a timeout now down to 1 and have to punt away with 3 mins to go.  We do get the ball back drive down and do so using running plays so he uses his final time out, I believe we are on the Rice 13 at the time.  He chooses ANOTHER running play on third down rather than kicking and getting out of there.  So now with 10 secs left we are furiously getting our offense off the field and our field goal unit on the field and it was of course blocked.  Pissed yes, but not giving up, and this week should be the closest thing we have to a slam dunk.

Phats- This will be a tricky game trust me, playing at the Glass Bowl is not easy.  Toledo came within 12 yards of upsetting Nationally Ranked Ohio State last week, and I watched that game.  I really feel like the Rockets can hang with Boise, but I don't see them pulling the upset in the end.

Phats- Well one thing is for sure the Tigers will win this one, now just a matter of which.  I didn't see Clemson's game vs. Wofford but the score was a little shocking were they perhaps looking ahead to Auburn?  And how about Auburn surviving upsets in both week 1 & 2?  I think the SEC trumps the ACC so I am going with the Auburn Tigers over the Clemson Tigers in close one.

Phats- Lets face it if we lose this one we might as well forfeit the rest of the season.  We did get good news in that Robert Marve has been cleared to play, and it appears he will actually see the field this week.  He will improve us DRAMATICALLY, and that is nothing against TerBush he did a great job but Marve is just a bit stronger.  Purdue will win, but I see another ugly game coming and the Boo Birds will be out in force.

I remember so much from that day 10 years ago, where I was, what I was doing, seeing the cars lining up to get gas, and of course watching coverage upon coverage of the attacks that changed the United States forever. I was always one of those Americans that lived in a bubble I never dreamed I would see an attack like this on American soil, maybe that's ignorant way to live, but it's just the way I felt. In trying to write this I keep thinking or searching for something profound to say on the 10th anniversary, and I keep coming up with nothing that I feel does the situation justice. So instead of rambling on I figured I would end this post here at least of actual written words, and simply say God Bless the USA.

Week 2 Lets Go Boilers

Boy this being a holiday week it went FAST now the weekend is upon us yet again, and week two of college football is now here, and we welcome the NFL to the fold as well. The Boilers will hit the road for the first time after surviving a major scare in their opener in temperatures on the field that reached 121. Oddly enough that might help them for this week as we travel to Houston, Texas to take on the Rice Owls. Should be a good test for the Boilers, and hopefully we will have improved from week one or we might come home with a loss. Another bright spot it sounds like quarterback Robert Marve will be available to play some as well, looking forward to another great weekend of football.

Booya- Oh puulease! This is the battle of the still ises and the never really was. Sure Miami has Bush but what about…well… that’s really all there is. If I know Tom Brady, and I don’t, I know that he is tired of hearing about himself, and his hair, in the off season and he is going to want to shut some people up. But it’s not really going to end up like that. For some reason I see this Monday night show down coming out something like

Pittsburgh Steelers(Rocket) at Baltimore Ravens
Booya- Right out of the gate this should be a good game. And to be honest with you it is pretty well balanced. The Ravens have Falco, Evans, Rice & Boldin on offense. Match that to Rothlisberger, Ward, Miller & Mendenhall on the Steelers. On the surface it should be pretty even matched up. And as far as talent it is, but here is something that you got to keep in mind this is Evens first year on the team and Boldin only has one year on the team. What does this mean? It means that a major part of your offense may not have had time to gel as a unit during this interesting off season, while the Steelers have been together for a few years. Advantage, Steelers. Now, on to the other side of the ball, on the Ravens you got two big names in Terrence Cody and Ray Lewis. BUT! While Lewis is seasoned and known to be a motivator and leader on the D, Cody, who was a beast in college, only has one year in the pros under his belt. The Steelers D has Polamalu, McFadden and Taylor in their secondary. Remember earlier when I was talking about Baltimore’s offense not being so seasoned? This is where the Steelers are going to pick them apart. Honestly, do you think that if Evans runs a route wrong (this is football talk Phats, just pretend that you understand) Polamalu wont pick him apart? Not to mention that Troy is in contract talks so he is going to show that he is worth all of those millions, even the ones that he is not getting from a shampoo company. So unless Lewis has a knife with him, advantage Steelers. My prediction –

Fresno State Bulldogs at Nebraska Cornhuskers(Travis)
Booya- Stevie Wonder could see who is going to win this game, the Huskers. But not because they are scary talented but because of the media/Texas A&M educed future implosion of the Big 12. You see every school in the Big 12 except Texas and Oklahoma are looked at as secondary, especially when it comes to football. Now each of those schools are playing with a chip on their shoulders, just the way I like it! Unfortunately for the Bulldogs they are probably going to get the snot beat out of them (Get’er done!). When the final seconds tick off of the clock the scoreboard is going to look something like

Booya- Come on, it’s Texas, they’re always supposed to win right? *Corso voice* not so fast my friend! You know how some games have names, like the Red River Shootout, The battle for the golden axe or whatever it’s called and so on? This game is going to get a name too. It will be called the Mack Brown early retirement game. Sure the Longhorns are favored by a mighty 7 points and have that dominating win over Rice last week (insert eye roll here) but BYU squeaked out a 1 point win over Ole Miss last week. That might not sound very impressive on the surface but if you watch you will see that Huston Nutt is named correctly because he is a nut, he is F’ing crazy. He would kick his grandmother down a flight of stairs to win a game, in other words he’s not an easy win. I’m picking an upset with this one,

Alabama Crimson Tide(Booya, Gary, & Cheryl) at Penn State Nittany Lions
Booya- Oh man, this rivalry is one that I remember from when I was a little smart ass, two of the greatest minds in college football, Joe Pa and Bear Bryant, battling it out on the gridiron. And you knew it was always going to be a low scoring game because defense wins championships. And Joe Pa is still there! Talk about tradition. But there is a different coach at Alabama now. And he is like the Honey Badger, he doesn’t give a shit about tradition, except for the tradition of winning. He also has a team stacked with talent. He just needs to knock off that splitting time QB crap. In other words, they are going to rename Penn State, Title Town North after the Tide rolls.

Booya- Is it bowl season already? Because this sounds like a bowl game to me, the toilet bowl. With that 3 point win over MTSU last week I can’t see Purdue winning this one. And when the Owls win they will probably cut off the head of that stupid Purdue Pete mascot, put it on a stick, pee on it and then set it on fire and march it around the stadium.
