Lots to cover
Hey guys! How is everyone's summer going so far?? Here pretty good, it's hot, but I have a pool so that is great, however I fell asleep in the pool the other day on a raft. Thank God for sunscreen that is all I have to say. So, today's post is going to be a hodge podge of topics if you don't like one keep scrolling til you find one. I figured that best since I haven't really blogged in awhile.
Sports
So, my all time favorite tennis tournament starts Monday, that is Wimbledon. Ever since I was a little kid I remember watching every single minute of this tournament. I am not sure why, maybe it's that they play on grass, or possibly the great traditions. You must wear pretty much all white and your outfit has to be approved by their board. On the women's side of the things the Williams sisters have pretty much owned Wimbledon and I am not sure I see that changing much here. My pick is Serena, but watch out for the unretired Justine Henin. On the men's side it's a little more tricky because Federer who used to own Wimbledon and is the defending champ has not played well lately, and of course Nadal who won 2 yrs ago is back and healthy. Most signs point to a Nadal/Federer final I hope it is and another epic one. I am picking Federer but don't sleep on Andy Roddick as much as it pains me to say that.
soccer- I am going to admit I hate soccer, I actually think it's pointless and boredline not a sport. For a friend I said I would watch the US first world cup game, and I found another reason to hate the game. WTF is that damn noise!? It sounds like a swarm of angry bees and should not be allowed. Look some people might watch in the US but lets be honest here once world cup ends soccer will go back to obscurity in the states where nobody really gives a damn about it. It's pretty bad that your biggest stage can have ties(yes I know it's group play same thing though) Soccer just won't ever catch on in the states.
expansion- So the biggest sports news lately was the talk of conferences expanding in the college game, and it actually happened! The conference Purdue is in, the Big Ten has welcomed Mr Travis' Nebraska Cornhuskers to be our 12th team. The Pac-10 tried to make a major play and go to 16 teams by inviting Colorado, Texas, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, & Oklahoma State, but only Colorado bolted. So get this we(the big 10) are now the big 12 and the big 12 is now the big ten. For the most part I love this move, Nebraska will bring it's insanely huge football following, and it has great olympic sports. The one drawback is their basketball team sucks big time, at least IU has hopes for 2 wins now :) I have heard too that Nebraska has some of the nicest and best fans in the game so that is great, I wonder how they will take to Madison WI where they throw beer on you!? ha! Wonder what the new name will be or do they keep it the Big 10?
Politics
So, those that know me know I don't usually talk about this stuff on my blog because I try to keep it light and lets face it this topic usually sparks some kind of tension but I had some things happen lately that made me want to address it. Let me start off by saying I am a democrat, but I am not going to lie I am not a voter, nor am I registered. That is another reason I don't talk about it on here. However, I live in a SMALL community that is VERY conservative and lately some things have been said around town that have me really upset. A friend of mine made a comment recently, she said "I sometimes wish the plane carry Obama would go down in flames and we would all be better off" another comment I heard recently was "I am surprised and a little disappointed Obama hasn't been shot yet" OK first off those remarks are WAY out of line no matter who you are speaking about, however you are speaking about the leader of our country show some class. Second if that would have been said about George W these same people would have wanted the person who said it brought up on hate crimes. In my opinion republicans in this town are very hypocritical, and bigots. My own relatives are very homophobic and have made some slurs that just make me cringe, but to appease my mom and not make trouble I bite my tongue which is bad, but with my grandma in a fragile state it was best. I don't really understand why people have a problem if two men or two women want to get married. Most gay relationships last longer than straight ones and are far more healthy let em get married. So, I am getting off my soap box now.
TV/Theatre
For my birthday my family took me to see the musical Jersey Boys at the murat theatre in downtown Indianapolis. Holy smokes it was great, if you ever get an opportunity to see this show DO IT! For those who don't know it's the story of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, and the music is awesome. I would definitely go see this again for sure.
TV- I believe I have discussed this before but Kristen and I's new favorite show is Glee we watched that together every week, and the finale was AMAZING. If you aren't watching this show you should catch the reruns this summer on fox Thursday's at 8. I loved how the finale kind of tied everything together, and the Journey Medley New Directions did at Regionals was AWESOME. Can't wait for season 2. Some of my favorite summer shows have started, does anyone watch Royal Pains on USA? I caught that late last year and latched on, it's pretty good, and of course Big Brother starts in a few weeks and that's one of my favorites. What are you all watching this summer?
Books
I love to read I am currently reading an Iris Johansen book in the Eve Duncan series. For my birthday I got the Stephen King book Under the Dome. Has anyone read this? I am trying to decide if I should read it this summer, or wait til winter because it's pretty big just over 1000 pages, and I am always looking for books when I am snowed in!
We had our annual end of the year tennis party which is an overnighter and man I am exhausted! I don't stay ALL night but close enough, my assistant coach who is a female does stay all night. I left this year at 4:45 when the last three girls decided to FINALLY go to bed. We had a good time we walked to the school and played kickball on the football field, of course did some TP'ing of houses, played tennis at 2am that's pretty cool, and of course they always make me tumble. I think I am starting to get too old to throw a full twist, but I still do it, and MAN my legs are sore. It was a great season, and this group of girls is pretty awesome. Can't wait til next season.
Alright this should do for now. Wishing Topolk's Clemson Tigers the best of luck in the College World Series, I saw they got rained out tonight. I want to see a picture in your shirt though! Don't forget everyone college football right around the corner
